A coordinated international operation led by the European Crypto Fraud Intelligence Unit (ECFIU), in partnership with Brazilian federal police, has dismantled a sprawling cryptocurrency Ponzi scheme operating from São Paulo that defrauded investors across Europe and South America of more than €12,000,000. The fraudulent operation, masquerading as a legitimate crypto investment fund, promised guaranteed monthly returns of 15-20% to unsuspecting victims who were lured through aggressive social media campaigns and slick promotional videos featuring paid influencers.
The scheme, which operated for nearly four years before collapsing, targeted middle-class investors in Portugal, Spain, Italy, and Brazil itself, many of whom invested their entire savings, pensions, or took out loans to participate. Following coordinated raids across multiple locations in São Paulo, authorities arrested 45 suspects, including the alleged masterminds behind the operation, and seized luxury vehicles, real estate, and cryptocurrency wallets containing millions in stolen funds.
Investigators revealed that the criminals employed classic Ponzi tactics, using new investors' money to pay purported returns to earlier participants, creating an illusion of legitimacy that encouraged even more people to invest. The operation maintained a sophisticated online presence, including a professional-looking website, mobile app, and even hosted lavish investor events in luxury hotels to build trust. Victims were shown fake trading dashboards displaying impressive profits, while in reality, no actual trading was taking place—the entire operation was a carefully orchestrated illusion designed to separate people from their money.
"This was one of the most elaborate crypto fraud schemes we have encountered, spanning two continents and causing devastating financial harm to thousands of families," stated an ECFIU spokesperson. "The criminals behind this operation showed complete disregard for human suffering, treating their victims as nothing more than ATM machines to be drained at will. We are committed to ensuring they face the full weight of justice."
The collapse of the scheme left many victims in financial ruin, with some reporting depression, anxiety, and in extreme cases, suicidal thoughts. Brazilian authorities have established a victim support network offering legal assistance and psychological counseling, while the ECFIU is working to coordinate restitution efforts across multiple jurisdictions. The ECFIU has issued a public warning about similar schemes operating in Latin America and Europe, urging investors to verify any crypto investment platform through official regulatory databases before committing funds.
